Kunoichi Koshino

geisha final may2015

Hello Readers!

I was thrilled to be asked to to be a judge for this round of Colour of Couture! The task for their challenge was:

“Junko Koshino is one of Japan’s most highly acclaimed and celebrated fashion designers. She is best known for her bold, sophisticated and cutting-edge designs. Koshino’s work varies – she designs functional garments featuring geometric, sometimes asymmetrical shapes, with a lot of black but also bright and contrasting hues. She also makes boldly avant garde designs which are much more like wearable art. She emphasizes a focus on the femininity of a woman, but is always experimenting on new ideas. She is also guided by the Japanese concept of “Taikyoku” – contrast in balance or harmony.

Her work varies, sometimes it is boldly avant, sometimes it dances the edge between avant garde and more wearable couture. She loves to experiment with different materials, such as metal and rubber, and work to express the qualities they have, and how that informs the design.”

Colour of Couture holds a special place in my heart as one of my most favorite competitions to participate in and it helped me prepare to be a Miss, so to be asked to judge for it was a special treat. I of course want to style my own take on the theme and that is what I did above. I found it refreshing to style what I would and not stressed about being judged. Judging is so much better than being judged!

Colour of Couture 2014 Concludes

Hello Readers!

What a whirlwind it has been for me this last week or so.  I am finally off for the summer and have a chance to catch my breath and reflect.

Colour of Couture concluded this past weekend on May 31, 2014.  I was thrilled to make the Top 8, which had been a goal of mine.  Sadly I did not make the Top 3, but I am very happy for those who did: my amazing sis Flidais “Fly” Etchegaray was 2nd runner up, the wonderful Eleseren Brianna was 1st runner up (and the new Miss VW Peru 2015!), and the talented Vera Fenutzini was named Miss Colour of Couture 2014.  I am so proud of all my Colour of Couture sisters, we did an amazing job and shared quite the journey.  It always amazes me when I enter a competition how close I can get to those involved.  Colour of Couture was certainly one of those instances.  Not only was I glad to get to know each of the candidates better, I was glad to get to know Reign Congrejo, Sequoia Nightfire, DiamondGem Destiny, and Spirit Llewellyn.

In the finale we were tasked with two challenges…Maximalist and using one of Kimmera Madison’s dresses from Tres Beau Designs.

In both stylings it was important to me to represent the Latina I am. The “mantilla” like head dress from Pure Poison is one I have had a LONG time and have been dying to use.  In the Tres Beau styling I wanted to go with big hair and big accessories which have always been something I have noticed growing up in all the stylish Latinas around me and something I myself gravitate to.  As I have proudly declared on more than one occasion in SL…”Soy Boricua!”

As a special treat I learned I was the challenge winner of the Artizana Photo challenge!  The image below was created by my dear friend Gethsemane Idler and used as the vendor photo for the fat packs of Dainie Fraina‘s “Lakshmi” which will be sold at Fashion for Life! The event opens on June 7th and goes until June 20th. It has been such a pleasure to get to know Dainie and I was thrilled to be invited to be a blogger for Artizana!

In the end, even though I was not crowned Miss Colour of Couture 2014, I still feel like a winner!  I made amazing new friends, got to know wonderful new people, and continued to grow and challenge myself as a stylist.  Now on to the next challenge!

Colour of Couture: DSquared2 Challenge

Hello Readers!

There was another Colour of Couture Runway Challenge today and this time our challenge was to style inspired by the Spring/Summer 2014 Collection of twin brother designers Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2.  We were asked to write a couple of paragraphs about our inspiration for the styling, so here is the look I came up with, my thoughts on it, and the credits.

My Inspiration:
After doing my research on DSquared2, I found that their Spring/Summer 2014 collection was geared toward the pool side and inspired by the 1950s with bold, shapely dresses, and svelte swimsuits. Sexy “Bond Girl”-esque hair and large glamorous hats were a must as well, not to mention vibrant colors and prints, as well as animal prints, neutrals, and pastels.  I found that the DSquared2 SS 2014 collection really has much to offer the discerning fashionista.

As for me personally, I found there was a lot of fun to be had in exploring the trends housed in this collection.  I immediately gravitated toward the fifties inspiration and wanted to capture it in the high waisted shorts and modest heel.  I enjoyed the playfulness of pattern and color and went with some of the pastels which are a trend for the Spring/Summer 2014 season.  When it came to the hat, I wanted one in a similar shape as the collection, but one with it’s own flair to add to the fun of the entire look.

I always enjoy seeing what the other candidates bring to the table with their interpretations and I was not let down.  I think as a group we did a fine job of representing all the elements of the DSquared2 Spring/Summer 2014 Collection.  Well done ladies!

This was a last competition challenge before the finale and I can’t believe the journey is nearly done.  I will be sharing one additional surprise Colour of Couture photo challenge with you all as soon as I have clearance to do so, so mums the word! In the mean time however, I wanted to express just how much I have enjoyed this whole competition.  No matter the outcome we are all winners and I know I don’t just speak for myself when I say the entire experience has been an enjoyable one.

New Horizons

Hello Readers!

I have been aching to blog so much more than I have of late, but there is only so much time in the day!  RL & SL have gotten very demanding, but I did that to myself and I enjoy the things I am involved in in both worlds.

This weekend was a big one for me.  Not only did I have Colour of Couture’s Charity Challenge, I had SCALA Models Academy graduation which was SCALA’s first official production.  I was thrilled not only to be invited to be a model for SCALA, but asked to be a part of the staff and the graduation show contained a bit of my work as a script writer, as well as that of my very talented sis Liat Reina.  My congratulations go out to all the talented new SCALA graduates!  I so enjoyed watching them tear up the runway! Then there was the VISIONAIRE Graduation Exhibit, which was the culmination of my SL photography classes.  I cannot say enough how unique an experience this was, and how much it helped me to grow as an SL photographer.  I still have a lot to learn, but what I can do now, as compared to before VISIONAIRE, is simply incredible to me. Learning from Nariko and Wren was amazing, and the other VISIONAIRE trainees were so very supportive and inspiring.  I have really experienced nothing else quite like it in SL.

Silly's CoC Practice

The photo above comes courtesy of my sweet sis Liat.  Words cannot express the extent of my feelings for her. She was a wonderful audience for me as I practiced for the Charity Challenge and gave me much constructive criticism and feedback.

The gist of the challenge was to propose a charity event that I would make a reality if selected to be Miss Colour of Couture.  For me, the choice of charities was simple, Guide Dogs of America (GDA). I have been involved with GDA for several years and have served as a volunteer puppy raiser, raising three wonderful dogs for them.  There is something about the amazing ways animals can help us and those with disabilities that touch me deeply.  As I prepared for this challenge I realized that my charity might be a bit too regional to appeal to the very global community of Second Life.  So I did a bit of research and discovered Assistance Dogs International (ADI), a coalition of non-profit assistance and service dog organizations that hail from around the globe.  I was thrilled to learn the GDA was a part of this coalition.  So my proposal was for a charity event in SL that would benefit ADI and in turn all of its member organizations.

In case you are interested in the text on Liat’s photo, there is an ongoing joke amongst the CoC candidates that stems from my inability to type “high-5” as “^5.”  Apparently I have an aversion to hitting those keys right and my ^5 comes out 6%. *laughs*  I love it when the CoC candidates 6% each other.  It really makes me smile and gives me a good laugh.  That just doesn’t get old.  I can’t speak highly enough about the other candidates.  They are a fine group of ladies and I am so very pleased to be competing with them.

I can’t post a photo and not credit it if I am able. In Liat’s photo my outfit is called “Don’t Hold Your Breath” from Liv Glam and was a part of the recent Style Icon Fashion Fair. My hair is from Tram, and shoes were “Maggie” a heel available for Fifty Linden Fridays for Slink High Feet by .fri.  My dog is Manticore and the slide projector and screen are by Seven Emporium.  I LOVE this slide projector and I was sooooo excited to do an actual slide show in SL.  It has been AGES since I had done one and I had soooo much fun making the slides for it.

Immediately following my Charity Challenge was SCALA Model’s Academy’s graduation.  Congratulations to Danity Mynx, Trouble Dethly, Winter Zhukovsky, LolaPandora, LuceMia, Deborah Vos, Leezah Kaddour, Sungyoung, Zoomy Bluebird, Christopher Law, Aely White, AliceAmber, and PetraAlexander!

As a part of my final for VISIONAIRE I was tasked with photographing two of the SCALA trainees.

Danity Profile

I first met Danity Mynx as a Glam Girl contestant for Liv Glam.  I thought her styling for that contest was fun and creative and I had to get to know her.  We have been friends ever since and I was thrilled to be assigned to take her photograph.

Trouble Profile

Trouble Dethly I recall seeing at the 2nd public casting for Style Kingdom Magazine.  He stood out to me mainly because of his name.  Like my own avi name I found it amusing.  I didn’t say anything to him then primarily because I didn’t want it to appear I was hitting on him or flirting in some way.  I was pleased to get to know him better since and know that he doesn’t consider me a scary stranger anymore. *chuckles*

Please visit my Flickr to see the rest of the photos I took of these very special and talented models.

VISIONAIRE GRADUATE EXHIBITION

Lastly there is the VISIONAIRE graduate exhibition.  I have never taken so many photos in such a short time as I did with this final!  I LOVED it though and truly enjoyed setting up a gallery to exhibit my work.  I still cannot believe that it is over and that Nariko and Wren consider me a colleague instead of a student.  I was honored from the start that even without photography experience Nariko would have me as the VISIONAIRE manager, assisting her and Wren with managing the institute and its students.

Sophie Profile

The above is my version of Sophie.  The shape was one given to all of us…the exact same no modify shape.  We could then do with it what we would.  I put on a beautiful skin by Izara Zutka of 7 Deadly S{k}ins called Tina B3b and told my story of Sophie. I wanted to tell a tragic love story, and the story that emerged was loosely based on Dante’s Divine Comedy and the story of Francesca and Paolo. If you visit my gallery you will see a sign at the entry that gives out some bonus information.  I also have a guest book, so please do sign it.

The jewelry in the photo is Polly by Mandala, the gown is Free Romance – Frozen by Living Imagination, the hair is Amita by EMO-tions, the eyes are IKON Eternal Eyes in Hazel, and the makeup is Wrath M1 DEF by 7 Deadly S{k}ins.

There are currently two exhibitions.  One is on the same sim as the SCALA graduation, and the other is on the SCALA/Visionaire home land.  You can see the press release and get SLurls to both if you visit Nariko’s blog post.

So I think I have caught you up on the latest.  Oh, there is one more thing! Coming up this Saturday, April 19th at 1pm SLT is SCALA’s 2nd production…a LivGlam fashion show and it is my first time serving as a producer, so I am very excited!  More info to come on that show very soon, but do mark your calendars!

Colour of Couture…the Journey Continues!

Hello Readers!

RL & SL have certainly kept me busy of late!  I am back though and wanted to share another reason my blog posts haven’t been coming as frequently…it is a very good reason actually.  I am enjoying being a contestant in Colour of Couture.  Styling challenges are something I have enjoyed since my very first modeling classes.  Today I am sharing with you two of my most recent Color of Couture stylings.

The first was for Earth Hour an event hosted by Amazing Impressions Modeling agency that spotlighted the need for all of us all to be united in protecting our planet.

Earth Hour - Silly Avro - cropped

I was fortunate to be selected as one of 60 models to have an Earth Hour inspired look taken by the talented Marcopol Oh.  I am wearing “Earth” by Boudoir and “Oceane” by {MUA}. (above)

CoC Cosmo

Colour of Couture gave us the challenge of styling in the theme of cosmo couture, highlighting green and blues, and considering Earth Hour.  It was a very tricky challenge, and after doing my research on cosmo couture I arrived at the genre had to do with designing looks with unconventional materials…and quite often building and interior design materials.  So once I understood that, I began putting together my look.  I fell in love with these bits of crashed satellite I acquired from The Grim Bros., I visited one of my favorites (Chrysalis) for the one legged jumpsuit, added some hosiery from Erratic, fun hair from Ploom, sexy make up from Nuuna (neck) and {MUA} (full face).  My arm bands are recent releases from my SL Mom’s store On A Lark, my necklace a former Collabor88 item from Yummy, and the colorful bracelets were a Fifty Linden Friday find from Erratic. Oh and I can’t forget the awesome claw boots from Wicca’s Wardrobe.  I was just looking for a reason to wear them and this seemed it!

Silly Baroque

Our most recent challenge was to style inspired by Thom Browne. I had a good deal of fun with this one.  I have never been asked to style baroque before (or cosmo couture for that matter) so it was an exciting thing to dig into.  After doing my research, I found that Thom Browne uses a variety of materials in his designs, one of the most notable rubber/latex.  I used a Graves latex catsuit as a base and built from there.  I knew once again Collabor88 would be my best friend, providing just the right pair of heeled Oxfords.  I added a cute pair of slink enabled socks, and for a pop of color a sexy red skirt from The Plastik.  When it came to the baroque part I looked around a bit, one of my frequent stops being Bare Rose.  The white skirt, corset, and top came from there, I added a fun HUD driven cameo and set the image to “death”, added some hair I found at The Big Show by Little Bones (who are new to me…I love when that happens).  My make up is a combination of {MUA}, The Plastik, and Buzz Essentials. I added a fun lil Dia De Los Muertes black rose…complete with skull, thorns, spiders, and webs as a personal reference to the Latina in me, and added cobwebs to my hair.  I couldn’t resist Remarkable Oblivion’s cat purse to bring a bit more crazy to my Thom Browne inspired baroque.

So there you have it.  A bit of why I have been so quiet on my blog, but I don’t intend for that to always be the case. I enjoy blogging and will continue to share the latest and greatest from the designers who have taken me on as well as things I find around the grid I think you might enjoy.

Colour of Couture: 1st Challenge

Hello Readers!

We have had our first photo challenge as candidates for Colour of Couture.  We were challenged to create a look inspired by Maison Martin Margiela’s Paris Haute Couture Spring 2014 collection.
I have to say I really do enjoy the fashion education I get through all the styling challenges I have been tasked with. This one was no different.  I studied the photos, discussed ideas with Nariko and Liat (aka my fashion team), did a little research on Margiela, and went with what jumped out at me.  Here is what I came up with.

SILLY AVRO - COC - FULLBODY| STYLE CARD |
tattoo top > .Identity.  – Courage To Change  [Fresh] Undershirt
bangles > LaGyo_Mirte bangles Black
coat > .Shi : Confi – Long Coat
shorts > ::Marshmallows:: Miss.Sweet Shorts-Twead
tattoo bottom > .Identity. Your Venom [Fresh] Underpants / Left & Right
shoes > erratic / selene – ankle boots
skin > Deesses Skins: Alicia – black eyebrows – ice frappe
pose > Slouch
location > R3volt Main Sim

SILLY AVRO - COC - HEADSHOT| STYLE CARD |
mask > LaGyo_Mirte mask Black
eyes > IKON ‘Sunrise’ Eyes – Celtic Green
make-up > Madrid Solo- Eyes & Lips- Shena- Full Set-Dark Night
earrings > LaGyo_Mirte earrings Black
hair > booN IIK551 hair black

We were asked to explain our thought process on our version of Margiela and this was mine:Inspired by the “inventive, creative and quirky” Maison Martin Margiela Paris Haute Couture Spring Collection 2014. Margiela’s collection was quite a treat for the eye in all of its contradictions. I spent quite a while looking at the photographs of this collection, as well as the live runway video of it, and did my best to absorb the bold quirkiness of it all.  I was immediately attracted by the tattoo top and knew it had to be in my recreation.  The over sized jacket was quite the curiosity as well so a quirky coat by .SHI appeared in my rendition.  The masks on the models were intriguing, and while we were not to obscure our faces, I had to bring in a bit of the mask effect with the piece from LaGyo.  On the whole I found the collection daring and I attempted to bring that factor into my look with wearing the tattoos from Identity.  There were also several short dresses in the collection, and I chose to represent that with these sexy lil tweed shorts from Marshmallows.  On the whole I enjoyed the challenge and the creative license it allowed me.

See the rest of the creative interpretations of the Margiela challenge by visiting the Colour of Couture Flickr pool.

Colour of Couture: The Beginning

Hello Readers!

As some of you may know, my modeling journey began only last summer after many years in Second Life.  I was amazed by all of the things the modeling world had to offer…from contests to pageants, to the wide and impressive assortment of creative designers.  It was a lot to absorb.  One of the contests that had stood out to me early on was the Colour of Couture because representing the Latina I am in SL was foundational to my virtual modeling career.  I have never desired to be anything but Latina.  Of course I mean no disrespect to those who have played with the color of their skin in SL.  It is as I always say…to each their own, so long as it harms none.  In SL you can be anything, so why not explore ethnicity? I just never had that particular desire.

I have been through so much since I first learned about Colour of Couture all those months ago, and when I was presented with the opportunity to apply I couldn’t resist.  I felt ready now, groomed by my failures and successes.  So I submitted my most culture loving photos and hoped for the best. The following photos are the ones I had commissioned with Skip Staheli to capture my Puerto Rican pride. *grins*

I was very pleased to then be invited to the live cast, and the following was my styling for it.  The theme was to style inspired by the Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Couture collection.
